On January 4, the 2-224th Aviation Battalion of the Virginia National Guard left Richmond for deployment to Iraq. The 2-224th is a Blackhawk helicopter squadron based in Sandston, Virginia. Their 360 members will not be back until sometime in 2007. Interestingly, this unit was started in Glen Allen in 1948. Several members of the unit were our special guests at Glen Allen Day 2005. Other Virginia National Guard units are in Iraq and Afghanistan. We want to recognize them as well.
